Whether it’s due to employment change, weather, family, schooling, or marital status change, millions of Americans move on average about 12 times throughout their lives.

Moving naturally requires a lot of planning and time, which can be very stressful and expensive.

A few moving related platforms exist in the market, however, there isn’t a consolidated platform where movers can do their research, budgeting, and planning all in one place.

To better understand the moving industry and market, I performed a competitor analysis on four companies: Moving.com, Zillow, City-data, Unpakt. These companies were chosen because they provided moving related service or information to users.

Of the four, Zillow seemed to be the strongest competitor, with large number of listings and database. However, while the large database may be beneficial, I also felt Zillow may be covering too broadly - both for home buyers and renters. Additionally, Zillow lacks specific moving-related features and does not offer any services related to furniture rental.

Moving needs vary by age group. Older users often look to buy, needing more research and consideration, while younger users seek temporary, affordable, and quick options. To better address user needs, I focused on the most frequent movers: individuals aged 20-29, or "young adults relocating to new areas."

Gender

Unlike my initial assumption, gender didn’t significantly influence relocation priorities. Both male and female users shared similar concerns and preferences, focusing on cost, convenience, and safety. For instance, both groups prioritized finding furnished options and preferred DIY moving over hiring professional services. This insight highlights the importance of addressing universal needs rather than assuming gender-based differences.

Young users typically sought furnished options when searching for a new place, valuing the convenience and cost savings of not needing to buy or move furniture. Additionally, they often preferred to handle the move themselves rather than hire a professional moving company, finding DIY moving more affordable and flexible.

Young movers (20s) who struggle to find a furnished place need an easy way to find a furnished place so that their moving process is much easier and so that they don’t waste money on furniture they don’t need. Providing a platform with various furnished options to users who are looking for a temporary place to live will help them save money and time from buying unnecessary furniture and make the moving process less stressful.

Users who are researching for a new place to move to need a reliable platform where they can find neighborhood information such as safety and amenities options more easily and efficiently because they waste time looking for these factors by sifting through multiple websites/apps and feel unreliable of the information found from those various sources. We will create a platform that provides this information in one place so that users can easily navigate and search for the information they are looking for while feeling confident about the data provided.

How might we consolidate all the information in the platform and help users find the information they are looking for most effectively (visually to the point, easy to read, easy to navigate, etc.)?

  • Young adults often look for furnished rentals where basic furniture and appliances are included for their temporary stay - to save time and money.

  • A few moving-related platforms exist in the market, however, there is a need for a platform for ‘young adults’ where they can easily find furnished options while searching for a rental place to make their moving experience less stressful and less time-consuming.

  • To build a platform where young movers can easily search for both place and furniture to rent in one place. This platform would allow young users to have a less stressful and less time and money-consuming moving/home search experience.

A usability test was conducted to evaluate the app's effectiveness, user satisfaction, and any areas for improvement. Five users were recruited to test the usability, and they were asked to complete 3 tasks:

  1. Searching for a rental place

  2. Renting furniture

  3. Use the 3D virtual tour feature

By observing their interaction, I was able to confirm what worked well, what challenges potential users could encounter, and what would be high-priority areas for improvement.

Overall, users found the platform straightforward to use and the furniture rental feature useful.

Based on the feedback from usability testing, I addressed the high priority items. Within the furniture rental process, I made the 'product detail' text clickable, not just the '+' icon. Under rental listing detail, I included a clickable contact info link for users to easily access. I also made the rental listing detail section headers stand out by changing its font colors. Lastly, I made the furniture rental more visible by increasing the font size and changing its color so that users do not miss this when going through the rental process.

In the process of designing an end-to-end application for Rentify, I gained crucial insights into the importance of user research. Through conducting user interviews, I came to realize that user perspectives often diverged significantly from my own assumptions and values. For instance, I had assumed that gender played a substantial role in relocation priorities and that most movers relied on professional moving services. However, my interviews revealed that gender wasn't a major factor, and a significant portion of young movers preferred handling moves themselves. Additionally, I discovered that recruiting users for interviews and usability testing early on could significantly streamline project timeline management by anticipating and mitigating potential scheduling challenges.
